Piano

Ecological music that shows the relationship between the piano sound and the final musical form

2008 (open)
Electroacoustic music for piano solo, elektronics and magnetic fields

The composition “Piano” is about ecological music, i.e. the composition shows the relationship between the piano sound (microstructure) and the final musical form. The piano sound, a primary acoustic characteristic, contains a set of information, for example an overtone series, proportions in amplitudes (loudness of a tone), which are made audible with the help of electronics and which determine the musical form (macro structure) of the piece. The composition focuses on the low string “B”. By attaching a magnetic field (coil) to this string the overtone with resonance (vibration) is perceptible. By a so-called “voluntary” resonance of the primary sound source (the chord “B”), other strings of the piano (secondary sound source) can also be set in motion. These two forms of resonance are shown to the listener by means of the composition. The composer has the role of translator, who presents and clarifies the listener the acoustic marks of the piano sound.
